Chipotle’s food safety training had traditionally been in-person and included activities where crew members demonstrated key skills to their General Manager (GM). When COVID hit, these trainings went digital, but the expectation for hands-on learning remained. The team needed a way to make that experience engaging, trackable, and scalable. The goal was to transform the quarterly Food Safety Training into an interactive digital format that allowed learners to demonstrate understanding without placing additional burden on managers.

Discovery & Research

  • Identified key learning goals: allergen avoidance, temperature control, cross-contact, and sanitization

  • Analyzed real food safety incidents and common crew mistakes with Food Safety team

  • Designed for simplicity, mobility, and quick completion

Design Strategy

  • Chose a game-first approach to grab attention and improve retention

  • Balanced required policy with humor, visual clarity, and tactile interaction

  • Developed a mix of core content and break-out “challenge moments” for reinforcement

  • Cards for Food Safety — a fun, branded twist on Cards Against Humanity for review and recall

  • Catch the Ingredients — a snackable arcade-style game to reinforce allergen awareness

Interactive Scenarios with Trackable Performance

  • Added “show what you know” activities at the end of each module — learners responded to food safety scenarios with realistic options

  • Built in logic to track correct responses, giving visibility into task completion and accuracy
